Patient Charges for NHS Treatment

Patient charges for NHS dental treatment in Scotland are agreed and set by Government.
NHS dental examinations are free to all patients, other NHS treatment provided will have a different charge attached.
Some items of treatment are not available under the terms of NHS dental services; such items include white fillings or crowns in back teeth.
At the moment, the maximum charge for NHS dental treatment is £384.

Some patients may be exempt from charges.
Those under 18 or between 18 &19 and in full time education are automatically exempt from NHS charges. Patient receiving certain benefits may also be exempt; entitlement must be confirmed by the patient prior to commencing treatment, and proof of exemption will be required by the dental practice.

While not possible to provide a list of exactly how much each filling , denture or crown will cost due to dependance on individual teeth, the material used, the size, and location.
For example, Fillings can range from £6.60-£25.60.

Your dentist can provide an itemised plan at your request; this will include expected treatment and associated costs before treatment commences
It is important to note that this plan may change during the course and therefore the costs will also change

Dentists may provide treatment items privately as an alternative to NHS care. You must discuss this with the dentist providing the treatment. The practice will provide information on any private treatment and the costs involved.
